I was pretty consistently eating 1200-1400 calories and 65-75 grams of protein and I lost 6 pounds in the first week. <br />
<br />
Then work got very hectic and I lost my appetite and had a day when I ate under 1000 calories. As a result, I put a pound back on. I guess I dropped too far below my metabolic rate, and my body went into starvation mode and held on to everything I ate or drank.<br />
<br />
I am now focused on staying in the target range to get my weight loss back on track. I am also adding some weight training with a kettle bell each day, and drinking more water. More on that to come in future posts.<br />

I had planned to go to our local Elks Lodge for New Year's Eve Prime Rib and Cracked Crab feast, but I started coming down with a head cold on Friday. Probably for the best, as I could stay on my diet, but unfortunately, lying low for the weekend hasn't made me feel any better, with respect to the cold. If anything, it is getting worse.<br />

Since then, I have not found a new stylist and took over my own hair coloring. I tried several products, with mixed results. The product is also very reasonably priced, at less than $10. This morning, I read Facebook posts while I waited and it was SO easy! So if you are looking for a less chemically, effective, quick hair color product--particularly right before New Years Eve, you might want to give it a try.<br />

What I noticed about the last couple of days on my diet is that I did fine, if not a bit under my calorie goal, and kept my protein content high, but where was the breakfast? I see that I don't eat anything before noon or one in the afternoon. That changed today when I had a bowl of Cheerios for breakfast with 2% milk.<br />

Weight Watching Tips for the Holiday SeasonThanksgiving is two days away, and many dieters face the anxiety of all the food that will be available at family gatherings. They aren't wrong. Studies have shown that people tend to add one to two pounds of weight between Thanksgiving and New Years.<br />
<br />
What to do then? Here are some tips to keep in mind for sticking to your diet during the holidays<br />
<br />
1) Stick to your same breakfast and lunch. If you go out for a big brunch or a big lunch, you are going to have to cut way back on your holiday dinner. To not offend Aunt Verdell by not eating the sweet potato fluff at dinner, don't blow out your calories at brunch earlier in the day.<br />
<br />
2) Mind your cocktails. Yes, alcohol makes the holidays more festive for many, but alcohol represents empty calories. Many cocktails contain hundreds of calories each (margaritas, in particular), so sticking to wine spritzers and continuing to drink water throughout the day will help to reduce total calorie consumption at parties and family gatherings.<br />
<br />
3) Remember how to portion out your plate. Although there are many yummy starch side dishes during the holidays, your plate should be allocated 25% meat, 25% starch and 50% salads and green side dishes. You can have a small taste of everything on the holiday table and not blow your diet if you keep your perspective on your plate and how much of each food group you are eating.<br />

Enjoying the holidays and all they have to offer does not mean having to move up a pant size in January if you take a few steps early on to be mindful of how you are eating and drinking. In this classroom study, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate a diet of protein shakes, canned vegetables, multi-vitamins and snack foods like Twinkies and chips for two months and lost 27 pounds. <br /><br />What was his point? That losing weight is purely a mathematical equation. It has to do with consistently eating fewer calories than your body needs to burn each day and that the underlying food is irrelevant, at least as long as some of it is actually healthy. <br /><br />So why all the emphasis on protein diets or vegan diets or low fat diets? They are all means to give people foods that may be more energy rich to drive less snacking. If a carbohydrate rich diet leads to a person being hungry every hour and a half and, as a result eating 3000 calories a day then, it is believed and has been proven in statistically large studies of dieters, eating protein at each meal makes it easier to get through the day and eat only 1800 calories.<br /><br />If you are very diligent about food logging and very disciplined about your caloric intake, then you too can diet while eating only Oreos, Tostitos and Twinkies. That just isn't a reality for most people. Frequently, once they start snacking, dieters feel badly about abandoning their diet and take a plunge off the deep end of their diet--eating the entire family sized bag of Tostitos in one sitting, with cheese dip--rather than negotiating with themselves about how the snack will now mean that what they planned to eat for the rest of the day may have to change.<br /><br />I think that the Twinkie diet makes a legitimate point that dieting does not have to mean suffering, and giving up all the foods you used to like to eat. It seems to me that there are multi-billion dollar opportunities to end government programs that are at cross purposes and lower the Federal budget. The most recent is Dairy Management, a subsidiary of the Department of Agriculture, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/us/07fat.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp">as reported in the New York Times</a> today, spending millions to persuade Americans to eat more cheese to boost prices and consumption for the US dairy industry (not to mention the millions in Federal farm subsidies) and the National Institute of Health telling us that the reason we consume too much fat in our diet is cheese. This is no different than the Federal government extracting penalty taxes from the cigarette manufacturers to pay for anti-smoking campaigns while continuing to subsidize tobacco growers. <br />

Ethanol does not become a cost effective fuel alternative until oil is $120 a barrel. So the Federal goverment subsidizes its production at the same time that it increases the percentage required to be blended into our gasoline, driving production of a heavily subsidized product. Moreover, ethanol takes corn out of the food supply, whether to feed humans or livestock, to burn in our cars.<br />

I hope that the newly re-empowered Republicans are willing to have the guts to say no to these conflicting programs, cutting them back completely to zero, rather than only limiting program growth. How about gutting Dairy management? Repeal the tax on farmers that is used, along with over $5 million of US taxpayer money, to finance its budget and let Dominoes figure out on its own how to make a better tasting pizza. Hmmm, would I trade cancer for weight loss? Well, once I am on chemotherapy for the tumors I got from a diet pill, I guess I would lose weight!<br />

I had a client a couple years ago whose doctor put her on Meridia. She complained almost immediately of racing heart symptoms. No wonder that one got pulled for risk of heart attacks.<br />
<br />
Decades ago, my mother went to the doctor for some diet pills. Those were the days of amphetamines. She lost a little weight, mostly because she was vacuuming the house at 500 miles per hour. In the end, she didn't like that feeling of racing through her errands and chores. No wonder it was called speed.<br />
<br />
These recalls and denials are a reminder that there is no easy answer to weight loss. There is no magic pill. Even Alli has some creepy side effects. The best, healthiest and safest way to lose weight is to lower your calorie consumption and raise your exercise level. Eating healthier foods--less processed food--helps a lot, also.<br />

A <a href="http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf/news/852576140048867C852577C10065D14D">new study offered at the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research </a>indicates that a higher protein diet for women, when calcium and and vitamin D were held constant, resulted in less bone density decline.<br />

What I liked about this study was its size and length. Forty-seven women participated for a year. The size is statistically significant and the duration was long enough to measure real effects. Many studies that get into the news have fewer than 25 subjects and last as little as 12 weeks. I think this offers credible evidence that particularly as women approach menopause and begin to experience hormonal changes that can affect nutrient absorption and bone density, increasing the level of protein as a percentage of total calories is important.<br />
<br />

The steak was herb rubbed and grilled. I found the crunchy veggies satisfying and filling with the steak.<br />

Giving up grains was not too much of a struggle, but I am having a tougher time substituting celery with my peanut butter than the slice of toast I used to rely on for my mid-morning snack. <br />
<br />
What is happening without bread or pasta in my life is that I am losing weight. That part of giving up gluten works. I don't notice any change in my energy, sleep patterns, digestion by not having it, but Tim's guest shot post indicated I would feel it more when I go back to eating grains. Until the day his dentist told him he had advanced gum disease, and he would begin to lose his teeth if he didn’t make a change. From that moment forward he began brushing, flossing and rinsing. Last Week Former President Bill Clinton explained to Wolf Blitzer about the reasons behind his new, nearly vegan diet:<br />

I did it because after I had this stent put in, I realized that even though it happens quite often that after you have bypasses, you lose the veins, because they’re thinner and weaker than arteries. I didn’t want it to happen again. So I did all this research and I saw that 82 percent of the people, since 1986, who have gone on a plant-based, no dairy, no meat of any kind. No chicken, turkey. I eat very little fish. Once in a while I’ll have a little fish. Not often. If you can do it, 82 percent of people who have done that have begun to heal themselves. Their arterial blockage cleans up. The calcium deposit around their heart breaks up.”<br />

Later in the interview, Clinton expressed his hope that with his new healthier regime, he would be around for his family and someday, for his grandkids. <br />

Short term goals like losing weight to fit into a wedding dress can result in the five or ten pounds of weight loss you need, but what happens on the all inclusive honeymoon? <br />
<br />
Being on TV vying for a quarter million dollars and then follow-up TV exposure seems to work for those on the Biggest Loser and other weight loss shows, but how many people in the public eye fall back into bad habits and gain all the weight back, like Kirstie Alley? <br />

Does it take the fear of death or threat of severe illness to generate permanent change? <br />

If you are getting ready to go on your next diet, try to pick powerful reasons for losing the weight. Reasons that are going to mean more to you than momentary life stresses that drive snacking or reaching for processed convenience food when you are in a hurry. <br />

Turns out that when they saw a cheeseburger and fries, they gave it one estimate, but when they saw the same meal with a salad, they gave that a lower estimate, thinking that the healthy food lowered the total calorie content.<br />
<br />
The study concluded that people overeat because they underestimate the calories of a meal with some healthy food in it. What was more interesting in the study was that participants who self-identified as dieters underestimated the calorie count by a greater margin than the non-dieters—increasing their negative calorie count. This study indicates that until people really know how many calories they are eating, they will continue to struggle with overeating. Yet another friendly reminder about why conscious eating and food logging matters for weight loss success.<br />

When I start a new weight loss class, I tell my students that they need to keep food logs of everything they eat. Some people immediately get their hackles up, claiming that they “don’t want to be held hostage” to their food log and calorie counting.<br />
<br />
I explain that for most of us Americans, because we have become such capable multi-taskers, we are eating more often and in larger quantities than we know. We eat in front of the computer or TV at home. We eat at our desks at work. We eat in the car. Because we are eating while we are doing other things, we do not realize and sometimes cannot even remember what and how much we eat.<br />
<br />
The food log wakes us up to what we are putting in our mouths. I suggest that my clients keep a small notebook or a post-it pad with them at all times and when they eat something, to immediately write it down. That way the clients are less likely to forget about the half of a bagel they picked up in the break room or the slice of cake they enjoyed in the office to celebrate someone’s birthday. If they are using computers to track their calories, given that there are so many free on line services now, they have their list of what they ate for later when they actually load it into the computer.<br />
<br />
Even food logging for just a couple of weeks before starting a diet is a great way to get a handle on what foods a person is reaching for in what situations. Once you can see that everything you ate for the last three days was a carbohydrate, you can begin to figure out why you have the sugar highs and carb crashes. My clients balance out their diet, identify their “go-to” foods when they are stressed out or upset, and start to take control of what, when and how they eat.<br />
<br />
After six weeks in my programs, I ask the participants to complete an evaluation of what they have learned, what they have changed and what they still need help with. Overwhelmingly, participants list among what they have learned is that food logging helps, but they also say that staying consistent with their logging is where they need help. Of course I knew that the medical costs of obesity were high, when you consider the extra doctor’s visits and the spendy prescription drugs obese people take for cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, acid reflux and type 2 diabetes, but also from sleep apnea and knee, ankle and back injuries from carrying all that weight around. The study also threw in assumed costs of lost wages from discrimination from being fat, for women more so than for men, and a cost for shortened lifespan. The study was sponsored by a gastric band manufacturer, which of course, is interested in broader reimbursement for gastric band surgeries. If only this was the answer!<br />

Another recent study reported that while the BMI calculations and weight did decline for people who had gastric band surgery from 47 to 30.5, the BMI a year after surgery is still in the overweight range. Many bars have more carbs and sugar than protein, so the bulk of the calories are going to burn off quickly and you will be hungry again in no time. <br />

Your goal is to find a bar that has 140 to 180 calories and 10 or more grams of protein. Some of the grocery brands that meet these targets are: South Beach Living Breakfast Bars, Special K Protein MEAL Bars, Slim Fast Diet High Protein Meal Bars or HALF of a Snickers Marathon Protein Sports Bar.<br />

I have also written about this book on my Review page on this website. A critical element of her thesis on food fasting is that it gives the body a break from processed foods that contain artificial chemicals and from meats and dairy that have hormones and antibiotics, which all embed in your fat tissue. Her point is that regular food cleanses allow these toxins to be released from your system. <br />

Now a new study from South Korea says that people who lost weight over 10 years seemed to have more of these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in their blood stream on an ongoing basis than obese people who store toxins in their fat tissue. So the greater issue would be the amount of chemically processed foods, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics thin and heavy people are consuming that results in the presence of these toxins in their bodies. The article on the study seems to imply that it is better to stay fat and keep these toxins in your fat molecules than get rid of them. The article also notes that there are no long term studies of the impacts of getting rid of these pollutants or holding on to them.<br />
<br />
Personally, I would rather minimize my exposure to these chemicals and hormones through eating more organic foods, cooking my meals from scratch at home, where I can control the salt and additives, and avoiding fast food and packaged convenience foods entirely,<br />

The FDA is at it again, with new warnings to soft drink manufacturers who are advertising false claims on the benefits of green tea in their products. I thought it was interesting that the article mentions that companies which received FDA warnings in March still had not revised their labels, so it seems the FDA may have more bark than bite if warnings are not enforced.<br />

I made this yummy salad out of my salad greens, two organic tomatoes and an organic peach. I used some light Caesar salad dressing. Whether it is a protein shake, peanut butter with an apple, an egg white omelet or even a hard boiled egg, protein will take longer to digest than that bowl of cereal or toast and will have you feel fuller longer. It cited a <a href="http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/165/8/854?maxtoshow=&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=2005+study+of+healthy+lifestyles&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT">2005 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine</a>, that examined the top five healthy behaviors--not smoking, exercise, healthy diet, managing stress and preventative health care like mammograms and colonoscopies. The study indicated that of the 153,000 people surveyed in 2000, only 2-4% of Americans do all of these things!<br />

With the rising cost of health care--Obamacare or not--I guess I figured more people were living like me, trying to do everything to stay healthy and out of the doctor's office. I guess that study only justifies why I should continue to write this blog and maintain this website!<br />

I have been feeling under the weather, and decided to drink lots and lots of green tea for a few days. It seems to be helping to ward off whatever beginnings of a cold I was experiencing.<br />

Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea? The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.<br />
<br />
Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.<br />

To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:<br />

What makes green tea so special?<br />
<br />
The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.<br />
<br />
Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the "French Paradox." For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.<br />

Why don't other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties? Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.<br />

New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.<br />

Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea - from deodorants to creams - are starting to appear on the market.<br />

To date, the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee.<br />
